Millcreek Open 2007

I played in a the Millcreek table tennis open a few weeks ago and I'm still waiting for the results to be posted on usatt.org. My rating right now is a pretty low 1287 but I'm hoping for it change to at least 1450 thanks to this tournament that I played well in. I'll update on when I get the results back, it should be any time now.

The Office

I started picking up The Office this season since I figured it must be good if so many people enjoy it, and so far I love it. The first four (or was it five?) episodes of this season have been hilarious. I love the pranks that Jim always pulls on Dwight, and I love the way Andy keeps trying to get with Angela (especially on last nights episode :-D)

I know I haven't updated in a while, but one of the things I think I should mention is that I ended up getting the Cingular 8525 that I was talking about getting in the posts below. There really isn't much to say/I don't have the time to list everything I love about it, but there's a lot, and I do. I think I use it like 3-4 hrs a day, which is a lot for one gadget. Usually I use my sandisk e260 to listen to music, but I tried using Windows Media Player on it today and I loaded some songs on it this morning. It's not too bad for a media player, but there are some things I don't like about windows media player, like you can't return to the previous screen without having to touch the screen and I'd rather just press a hard button.

Windows Mobile 6 goodness

Seems the phone I'm hoping to get in June when my contract ends (the Cingular 8525) is getting an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6. Niceeee, just one more reason to get this amazing phone; the amazing UI and added features included with WM6. Can't wait!

New phone/PDA?

So I've got my eyes set on the Cingular 8525. I've heard great things about it and it seems like its one helluva gadget. Right now I've got a nokia 6102 for my phone and my ipaq 4355 which I bought back in August. I love my ipaq, so I've been looking for something that has all the same features but will also be a phone and the 8525 (or HTC Hermes) seems to be the match. Plus, I've been hearing that HTC will most likely release an update to upgrade it to WM6 which will be great (having the latest things is always a plus :-)). Anyways, yeah that's what I've been up to, finding out more info about this and stuff.

Also, I wanted to plug a pretty sweet site that I found the other day. It's a magnificent time waster-- I spent about two and a half hours skimming through the entire site (yeah, it's addicting). Some of the things are quite interesting but I won't ruin the fun by spoiling the good parts :-P.

Essential pocket pc (PPC) programs

I've been using my Ipaq 4355 almost every day this school year (which means around September) on average about 3-4 hours a day. I've tried quite a bit of programs all of a wide spread of time because I don't like having too many loaded onto the memory (idk why, im just like that), and over that time I've kept some programs that I now feel that I could never go with out.

Adobe Reader
I get several emails a week that come with pdf's and it always helps to be able to read and look at them over and over again on the road. Adobe's mobile reader is amazingly easy to install (it's a cab that you can even install directly from the pda itself so if you have wifi and you are some how reading this, go ahead, go over to Adobe's website and download it).

MultiIE
I actually have only been using this for a couple weeks and so far I think its definitely essential. It helps to be able to open more than one IE at a time in the pda and it also solved my huge problem that I had before which was that every time I used my directional pad to scroll, it would scroll one page at a time instead of say one line at a time which makes it easier to read.

Weatherpanel
It's always nice to be able to have a weather program on your pda and this one is a great one. It's simple and yet has plenty of features. There are ways to customize what is shown on the main page also.

Magic Button
Nifty little app that makes it easy to close the programs completely, instead of just 'hiding' them like Windows Mobile does by default. It also shows icons for all the running programs in the top start bar so that you can easily switch between programs.

As you can see I don't have very many programs loaded onto my PDA and yet I use it all the time. I cannot praise it enough, I use it for everything; calendar, to-do list, instant messaging, wifi browsing, emailing on the go, taking notes, checking weather, listening to music, and I even wrote an essay on it once during my free periods and then went to my school's library and emailed it to myself then went on one of the computers and printed it off.

It's amazing how stupid some people are in this world, and it seems like our school has a lot of them. In fact, I'd say that half of my math class is riddled with fools that seem impossibly retarded. My school day ends with math so you would assume that I'd be happy because the day is almost ending and I'll be able to go home-- WRONG. In fact, the rest of the day compared to math class is a breeze; I don't have to deal with stupid who are dumb as fuck, and I actually enjoy the classes. I come from computer programming, which is by far the easiest class that I've taken in a while, so I leave that room feeling pretty good. Don't get me wrong, there are a couple people in the class that aren't bad, it's just the rest of the morons that make it painful to be in the room. I'd like to take the time to address those people.

Ugly man-girl that sits next to me: Please stop trying to be my friend. I don't like you, I never will and quite frankly, I hate talking to you, I hate listening to you, I even prefer avoiding to look at your horse face whenever I can. In fact, it makes my day when I walk into the room and you aren't there. Stop trying to talk to me; I don't want to have a conversation with you. I don't care if you're smart and want to help, I don't want help, I want to be left alone to do my work. And another thing: stop trying to inch your way more to my side. You usually get to class before me and you leave to go do something, probably eating hay somewhere, well whatever it is, you put your chair in the middle of the table. It's a table meant for two, meaning I have to have some room too. Maybe if you didn't have the stature of a man you could fit on your side, but you need to compromise and make room. It's annoying as hell moving your chair. And then when I do, somehow you end up right next to me again . Oh, and one more thing, Mr. Dear's jokes aren't funny, so stop and realize that you are the only laughing at them. You're the only one that finds them funny, and you laugh like a man too, which I don't need to hear. And the worst is when you try to point out his jokes to me. I understand them-- I understand that they aren't funny, so please stop trying to make me laugh at them; I don't want to. All of us the class understand that you are smart, and get good grades, so please stop asking 20 questions every class because we all know that you know how to do this stuff.

Fat ass ugly friend of the horse-woman that sits next to me: No wonder you're friends with the girl (is she a girl?) that sits next to me; you're just as annoying and hideous. First off, listen to me when I say that clothes you wear should not be made for people of your physique, and by that mean 5' 2"-230lbs. Nobody on this planet wants to look at your fat ass in tight sweat pants, and please buy some jeans that actually fit. I've tried explaining some of the things you have said before to my friends, and its not easy. Two boys that sit in the back: You two are wiggers, nuff said. One more thing, the Chuck Norris jokes died out last year, so please stop using them every time you can, I can hear you and every time I listen to you two talk, I want to bite my wrists until I pass out from blood loss.

Mr. Dear: I have to admit that you aren't a bad that had of a teacher. But please stop treating us like were in 3rd grade. We don't want to sing along with you, we don't want to recite every math problem on the board, and we sure as hell don't want to dress up and act out the problems. Teach the damn lessons and get over with it. Maybe if we didn't have to deal with all the singing, we could actually be ahead and have time to review.

Have you heard of this yet? Colbert is a god! This is the same man that has a bridge named after him and has won numerous awards (good ones too!). His show has become one of the smartest, and funniest shows on television; and that's quite hard to achieve.

The Decemberists are also a band that you folks may want to keep your ears tuned into. I'm practically in love with their song O' Valencia, that came out on their new album The Crane Wife and featured the infamous green screen music video. They've been gaining some steam lately and their huge appearance on the Colbert Report will do nothing but help them.

p.s make sure you watch all of the Comedy Central videos so you can learn the background, and take in all of the hilarity.

Alright so the stuff I had here before was way too short so I figured I would "elaborate" a little bit more. 1st of all, Merry Christmas (or is it happy holidays?) to everyone out there that bothers to read this. Mine wasn't too bad, scored a Gamecube, Fifa 06 for Xbox, a bunch of clothes, some stuff I needed like a new xbox headset and some screen protectors for my pda. I didn't really get into the spirit as much as I usually do this year though, which was kind of disappointing. I mean, apart from the pretty much mandatory Christmas wallpaper (or wallpapers for me, runnin' on duals over here :-P), I didn't really get into it all that much. Perhaps it was just the fact that this was one of the first years of many that we in Rochester didn't have a white Christmas. Usually its green (or brown?... gross) until the last couple days leading up to the big day; then we get about a foot or so of the white stuff just in time for it. This year was different though and I can't really remember the last time we didn't have a white Christmas (damn global warming!).

Alright well thats enough of that, let me know who else had a sweet holiday!

Interview with Greg Cypes, AIM developer

I emailed Greg, a veteran developer for the AIM team with some questions and here are the responses that he sent back to me. It's a little peak into the life of an AIM developer and some background information on new projects that are goin on behind the scenes at AOL. If you have questions for him, please post them on his blog. If you have questions for me, you know how to get in touch with me.

1. How long have you been working at AOL?
7+ years.

2. What is the most rewarding thing about working on the AIM project?
The people I work with are terrific, from the engineers to the testers to our managers. Though, I think the most rewarding thing is how AIM is used by so many people all across the world to keep in touch with each other. It has made the world a much smaller place.

3. What does your daily routine at AOL include?
I get in to work around 9AM. Typically I have a few hours of meetings a day going over various things like bugs we need to fix, new features we are developing, etc. The rest of the time I am working on code, some of it is code that AIM 6.0 UI developers need, code for Open AIM, or working with our Open AIM partners/developers to make sure they have all the support they need. I usually head home around 6PM, but I work until about 10PM every night. During that period I do things like post on my blog or answer questions on the developer message boards.

4. Can we expect any new features for AIM in the future?
Well without giving away all the details, and what fun would that be, I think we will continue to give our users the best experience in instant messaging. We plan to do this by continuing to support Open AIM and by making AIM 6.x the best it can be. Open AIM allows 3rd party companies and developers to build AIM clients that can focus on extending specific features to a specific community. For example, Super Computer International built a client called Playlinc that gives gamers a way to meet other gamers to play MMOGs. In the near future I think we will see some features that we have had on the shelf for many years make their way out into Triton, you will have to stay tuned to see what they are. Lastly, we will see some cool new things associated with Open AIM.

5. Aside from the recent update on AIM 5.9, do you intend to update 5.9 at all with any fixes or features?
The AIM 5.9 update was related to a patch Microsoft released for ActiveX controls. That code based is effectively retired.

6. How big is the team that works on AIM?
Many people work directly on AIM, but even more work indirectly with AIM. It would be unfair to give a number, because I might leave people out, but it would be fair for me to say the entire company has a stake in the success of instant messaging (AIM and ICQ).

7. Do you have a certain job in the AIM developement, or is it kind of all over?
I work on the core client infrastructure of AIM. What that means is that I work on the cross platform Open AIM code that AIM 6.0 was built on, in addition to other AOL products and of course 3rd party developers. Think of it as the instant messaging client side engine.

8. Can expect any new plugins for AIM Triton to be developed by AOL?
Absolutely there will be more plugins for AIM. Between our Facebook Plugin, AIM QuickBuddy, the Location plugin, and AIM Gadgets we continue to extend the features for AIM 6.x. In addition, I would expect to see more 3rd party developers coming out with plugins. We are continuously adding new support for plugins in AIM, and as always any plugin written for AIM 6.0 will work with any Open AIM client. We are also adding a new type of plugin for AIM called AIM Widgets. You can make widgets now for the AIM Lite client.

9. Are there any new projects in developement by AOL for AIM?
We continue to work on AIM Express which is our web based solution, in addition we just did a release of AIM Lite which is part of our experimental technology my group does with AIM. Included in our Mac SDK there is client code that when compiled is a nearly full fledged Mac client.

10. Do you guys have any goals for AIM?
I have the goal of trying to deliver the best IM experience out on the web.

11. Last one: Are you pleased with the way AIM has progressed over the years?
Definitely. We have gone from a one-size fits all model, to one now where we will always try to deliver a great experience via our flagship client (AIM 6.0), but also give people who are into playing video games (Playlinc) or are enterprise users (AIM Pro) an option other than AIM 6.0.

Can't believe I didn't pick this up, usually I'm pretty up-to-the-day with these AIM updates. This one comes straight from the AOL developers blog. The new buddy list limit for AIM is now 1000 buddies, which, to me, sounds absolutely crazy because I can't even think of having more than 300. I remember back in the day when the list was only able to go up to 200.

English essay on internet censorship

Back in the beginning of October I had to write a controversy on the topic of my choice for AP English. I chose internet censorship. I thought maybe since this is the internet and you are using it, that you might want to read this.

Nearly everyone has been on the internet sometime in their life whether it is to watch videos, or check the news, nearly everyone has been to a webpage before. Technology has taken off in the last decade, including the introduction of new software and the internet. By the end of the 90’s most people had used a computer before and the internet was just starting to be born. The internet will never peak, information is added at an almost constant stream and new, dynamic content will always change the way it looks and acts. Anyone can upload or say anything on the internet in minutes. Many people, especially bloggers, look to the internet as the epitome of free speech. But the internet is not free and just like in real life; it is very easy to offend someone online. There have been many instances where documents, videos, and messages have been posted on the internet without the willing consent of someone else to which they belong. Pictures and videos of death, pornography, and images intended to shock those that see them. With all these videos, images, and messages being posted on the internet, and the growing number of people that have access to the internet, should the United States, or the world, regulate the internet by censorship?

This question is asking us to lock the only total form of free speech we have. When the internet we use today was created in 1991, its general purpose was to share information, all information, across a broad network of computers. The world has come a long way and the internet has become exactly what it was created to be. Diversity in the news has also increased and although many sources may contain a biased view, there are plenty of sources to choose from, which ends up including every perspective in the end anyways (Current Media Ownership Rules Promote Freedom of Speech). Many feel that the government should ban indecency, but this is a violation of the 1st amendment. Pornography is a popular topic when it comes to indecency. Many fear that children have access to it too easily, and that it affects the minds of adults. Under the 1st amendment, it is stated clearly that “sexual expression which is indecent but not obscene is protected by the First Amendment” (Banning Indecency on the Internet is Unconstitutional). Taking action and the enforcement of indecency would cost millions and thats money that could be used for other, more important things such as foreign aid or settling domestic problems. Everyday students and others use the internet to research legit information. The wealth of available knowledge is beneficial to society.

But to what length should the internet be allowed to host anything people desire? The challenging dilemma is the fact that people are uploading illegal and controversial files and information. Many people fear that people go too far when they upload pictures or videos of injuries, or of activities generally deemed immoral every else besides the internet. One of the latest instances includes Steve Irwin. Some believe that the video shot by his cameraman should be posted online, but many believe that it should not be shown. Studies have shown that exposure to pornography is damaging to adults behaviorally (Indecent Material on the Internet Should be Censored). Shyla Welch makes the point that the easy availability of pornography for children can corrupt their mind at an early age and will ultimately affect the next generation's society. Specific data on this subject is not available because any experimentation with children would be unethical, but adults that have been exposed show signs that this is in fact true (Indecent Material on the Internet Should be Censored).

Without a doubt it would be great to have the internet censored, but it is not practical in my opinion. The high cost of enforcing rules for the entire internet is not a reachable goal, but enforcing rules on servers and internet hosts individually could be obtainable. The government should be making sure that the people that run the internet service providers, and the servers that host the websites and files that are indecent. This will be a less costly, and more effective solution. I absolutely agree with this compromise because I feel it would help society and not put a burden on the already huge national debt.

A solution that we as a society should look into for the future is to follow the compromise view. It provides the only means of solving the problem of indecency while at the same time using as little money as possible. It will require the “hosts” to regulate their own servers which means the government won't have to worry about watching as many people and the people and resources can be used for other, more important matters. This answer should be put into place sometime in the near future though, otherwise the children of today will be affected and the society of the future will in turn be affected.

The new crazy story on the internet right now is this painting that a Russian professor posted on his website. The story behind it is that it's a replica and it was painted by a man with a very rare mental disorder. In the painting lies one detail that betrays this mans insanity. The professor shows it to his students every year and in the 15 years he's been teaching, only one person has been able to figure it out.

Here are some hints that he has left us so far:
- the keywords are water and air
- look at the painting as a whole; if the houses and horses were removed
- what would you hear in the painting?

We were originally told that the professor would be online yesterday and the day before but he never showed but he is going to be on today and he said he will read through the almost 4,000 comments left on his website to determine if anyone has come close or better yet: guessed what the correct answer is. Two year anniversary...well, almost

If you care to a take a look in the archives somewhere to the right --> you'll notice that the older post is from November 19th, 2004. That's quite a long time ago and I've had over 100 posts since then. I've also changed my style several times since then. This was not my first blog, I believe my first was back in 2002-2003, I'm not certain. Over the last four/five years, I've had plenty of different websites, and plenty of different layouts but I think this one is one of the best. The first time I started this blog I was receiving no more than a couple hits a day. I'm not going to go into how much traffic I get now but it is a lot more than that and I'm happy. This is no where near my most successful blog regarding the number of hits I get each month, but I definitely put the most effort into this one.

I'm not sure if anyone out there reads this blog regularly, but if you do, I'd love to hear from you so please send me an email some time (my email address is at the top), or you can IM me too. If you don't read this blog regularly and are just reading this for the first time, stick around, you might find that this place is great; if you don't, send me a message as well and let me know what you don't like about it. I love hearing about my website from anyone.

AIM Ad-Hack is one of the most popular downloads for AIM. It gets rid of the buddy list and IM window ads along with all the extras to come packaged with AIM. It's a spectacular program and I download it everytime I have to install AIM on either my computer, or someone elses computer. So here are some questions I asked him about Ad-Hack.

1. What made you want to make AIM Ad-Hack?
One day after an upgrade. I ended up getting a streaming video ad, it ticked me off so I decided to put a stop to it. I originally only did it for me but a friend said "you should make a page for it!" So I did.

2. Is it just you that does all the work, or do you have people helping?
Nope, I have a partner; cub. He imed me one day asking if he could re-write my crappy installer. He did one hell of a job and has been my right hand [sometimes right and left] ever since. Hell, as of late, the updates on AIM have been so minor it only requres a tweak or 3 from him on the installer end. The last time I really really got my hands 'dirty' on the project was during one of AIM's "rewrites" where I had to do some comparing of code from old hack to new hack and the newest release uses one of my more 'brute', slash and burn techniques from the first trial tests of our Triton builds. So right now I handle the web stuff, the server load, and when something major happens with Triton I dig in.

3. What has been the most rewarding part of creating Ad-Hack?
Good question. I guess doing something that has such a large following.

4. Do you plan on making any other programs, or are you going to stick with just this one?
I tinkered with Yahoo for about 5 min. I'm thinking about picking on Windows Live Messenger if i can.

5. When you first started this project did you realize it was going to grow like it has?
Had no idea. Tossed it on the web almost on a dare.

6. What type of servers do you use?
Well the system actually changed last week. Used to be an old AMD 3000 XP Pro router into the adhack server. Switched that to a linksys router when the hard drive started to vomit. Adhack itself is served off a Pentium 66 Slackware box. Something like 94 megs of ram or something, can't remember. Had the server for eons. It just keeps running..

7. What type of traffic does your website receive? (hits, page loads, bandwidth, etc)
Oh goodness... oodles. In June of 06 we did 6110156 KB [yes, a big b]. In july we did 5882990 KB.

8. You've won four awards so far, which one has meant the most to you?
I was pretty proud of actually being featured on TechTV even though thats not an award. Other than that the 5 out of 5's are all from heavily respected sites so its hard to put any one before the other.

Last night I sent an email with a few questions in it for Tim Tibbetts, the co-creator of www.majorgeeks.com; a download site and support forum started in 2001. If you're reading this, I'm certain that you have probably stumbled upon the site sometime in your internet surfing career. It's a rapidly growing site with links from top software downloads like Lavasoft (creator of Ad-aware), Spybot, Spywareblaster, and more. The support forums are also magnificent, I have to admit that I've been quite a lurker on their forums and I have to say that I have learned a tremendous amount just from reading over solutions to posted problems, really. It is a very tightly knit community and everyone respects everyone and I enjoy communities like this. Well Tim happily responded to my email with the answers I had asked for not two hours before.

1. When you first started Majorgeeks, did you have any goals for the website? (growth, number of members, that type of thing)
To make a living in the web publishing business, though I had considered a job as Wal-Mart greeters, I doubt us geeks have the personality for it :) I used to be a driver for Airborne Express (now DHL) and injured my back, my hobby of computers has become my living. My partner Jim also wanted to continue in this business because Wal-Mart already turned him down. So, we want what everyone wants, as many members or visitors as possible. We honestly had no set number, we were scared about money because just as we started to take off, we were both broke and getting resumes ready. It was really that close!

2. What was your reason for starting Majorgeeks? (If I remember correctly, the forums came first back in 2001 I think).
MajorGeeks was an idea started with TweakFiles.com years ago, which we still had a lot of work to do to get it to where we wanted. It never was finished, or even close, when we were forced to sell that website along with a deal for selling 3dfiles.com. The forums did come first, a lot of old TweakFiles visitors managed to find us, which was VERY cool!

3. What is the most rewarding thing about running the site?
The emails (or forum posts) from people so happy they found us and were able to solve a problem or just learn.

4. Would you say you're pretty active in the forums?
Not as much as I used to be. With so much spam out there, I spend more time moderating (deleting) threads. We heavily moderate our forums for content and our readers appreciate that. Luckily we have great people there (too many to mention) who work tirelessly for no compensation whatsoever except the good feeling of helping and being a part of it. On average I check in on the forums about 15-20 times a day.

5. Over the years your site and forums have continued to deal with spyware more than anything else. Did it just occur this way on it's own or did you guys sort of aim the site towards fixing spyware?
We had no intention of it whatsoever. Our goal was to help people get the most from their computers, whether it was tweaking, repairing, changing the appearance or whatever, we wanted people to know their are tools for the job that can simplify it. Over the years we have watched basic security concerns like hacking and viruses turn to a financially motivated twist on those including spyware and phishing. Spyware just happens to be the big issue on hand right now, I think we got some help in that area by Lavasoft, the makers of Ad-Aware, linking to us as a download site when we were still a new website. This helped us start building a reputation as a trustworthy website. We also have many others such as Spybot, SpywareBlaster, Ewido and more who link to us that continue to help us help others. At one point, our website was being blocked by various malware creators so people could not download tools from us. You know you made it then ;)

6. What do you think is the key to the success of majorgeeks.com
Timing, like anything else. We had a good idea and happened to have spyware running rampant. It sucks and I wish it would go away because often I feel guilty that something so annoying helped us gain in popularity. Of course, helping people makes it all better. Jim and I are tireless and always on the same page, so that teamwork is vital to our success. That said, I am better looking and at last check, weighed less as well :) Our visitors are also passionate, always referring people to us. We have had people tell us that they were sent to us from from large computer manufacturers, internet providers and more as well.

7. What kind of servers are you using to run the site?
Wow, a lot? :) We have a dedicated server for the website and one for the forums. For files, we run 5 servers in various locations and 2 in Australia that were offered for free. We have a lot of Australian visitors, mate.

8. Just to give everyone an idea of how big the site really is, what would you say to describe the size of traffic you receive (hits, page loads, bandwidth, etc.)
I do not have the bandwidth numbers on hand, and traffic varies, but on average we have 2,000 people online at the main website at anytime and 3-400 on the forums. Part of the reason is I am not "allowed" access to certain features of the website where I can break stuff. LOL. I am known as a suicide tweaker, I love to tinker without a backup, which is fine until I destroy the whole website, which I used to be known to do.

9. Are there any new site features or updates to expect in the future?
Wow, are their EVER. MajorGeeks has so many areas where we can expand, but we like the "keep it simple stupid" theory, so we tread carefully. We are considering a few more categories and having the left menu expand for a few areas, so that internet tools, for example, can have a few categories such as FTP clients, tweaks, RSS readers, etc. As you know, we have mac.majorgeeks.com and our biggest project is a drivers section. We are sick of trying to find drivers and having to create an account or pay for what should be free. This is a big undertaking as we are only 2 guys and the drivers section, as far as file listings go, should be larger then MajorGeeks itself. I also started a gaming website called DemoNews.com, but it was never quite done as I wanted, so it will be relaunching soon as GoneGaming.com. We have a design in the works now. We also have an idea in mind for reviews that I think our readers will dig. We tried doing full bore reviews, but could not do them all with our limited time. We hope to launch both of these websites by years end.

Thats right, using shoutcast and winamp, i put together a little radio station. Right now it's just assorted songs, mostly classic rock but if things go planned I might be able to do other things with it. I'm trying to find a way to make a Shoutcast TV station so that I can stream my Tv Tuner, but things aren't working right now. Update: alright so I've got the server up and running fine and dandy, but the running hours are only going to basically be 1 P.M to 7 P.M. But don't worry, I've got a second computer being built and its got an 80 gig harddrive on it so I'm gonna try to get shoutcast running on that and then I can transfer my music to that computer and I can leave that computer running all night/day because it isn't as loud and it doesn't have case lights like this computer does. So don't fret, I'll hopefully have this computer up and running shoutcast with all my music on it by the end of the first week of September. I just got my VNC connection to work on my pocket pc and its very cool. I can control the whole desktop and everything from the pocket pc, all I need is an internet connection. If you have any of the things in the title, you should definitely check this service out. Basically you sign up, download the software, and run it in the background. It scans your system for webcams, TV tuners, videos, music, and pictures. Then you sign onto the website and you can access those files/tv tuners/webcams on any computer that has internet, as long as the software is running. It allows you to stream videos, music, pictures, the tv tuner connection, and your webcam to anywhere, its amazing. So far I've been using to stream my music around the house so that I don't have to update my MP3 player every time I download a new song. But when school starts, I plan on using the wifi at school to watch my cable tv channels (yes no cables and yet you can get streamed cable channels), and videos during school (and I've got about 500 videos recorded on my harddrive from my tuner-- great stuff). I've also experimented with the webcam function too; it makes a great survelliance system.

I was reading through some articles and I found this one about a study done about if a nuclear bomb were to explode at Long Beach, there would be around 60,000 deaths and the damages would outdo 9/11 by a longshot. Why not instead of investing money into a study like this, we use the money for security so we don't have to worry about this. I dunno know, stuff like this just doesn't make sense to me.

For almost two years now I've been wanting to take the leftover parts from my upgrade a while back and make a second computer for guests to use. Well, about three weeks ago I bought the only part I actually needed, a 10gig harddrive off ebay for I think $8. It's going to be a medium computer; Athlon XP 1800+, 128mb, 10gig, Geforce 5200fx. I've got it all set up and tomorrow I'm going to worry about loading XP onto it and getting some old school games on it too (you know, Half Life 1, Counterstrike....).

As for internet, I've got a crossover cable left over from when I had my Xbox hooked up through a bridge connection on my computer to do Xbox live a couple days ago. I plan on using a bridge connection to get the internet working on this guest one. It'll be a slower connection because I'm already only getting a low connection through the wireless card, so with it being shared it's going to be even less. We'll also be able to play counterstrike and stuff on the LAN.

With the 10gig harddrive, I'm gonna let people that come over use it for IMing and browsing. They can download anything they want on it, and when they leave I'll just get rid of all the stuff they download.

I was getting bored so I surfed around and I found this one and loved it. I think its great. It'll be easy to change the colors for the seasons also.

I also picked up like five games off amazon the other day for like $28 (can't beat that) and they came yesterday. They are: Men of Valor, Tony Hawks Underground, Unreal Championship, Max Payne, and Lord of the Rings Two Towers-- all for xbox. It should be a fun couple of weeks.

I also wanted to let everyone out there to know that I got Xbox Live. So if you have a gamer tag let me know (email it to me or just post it in a comment). Mine is Evilelf2407. I've only been playing Halo 2 right now. I think I'm like level 21 or something, which isn't half bad for only four days of playing.

For about two years now a mysterious website called Eon8 (www.eon8.com) counted down to July 1st 2006. Nobody had any idea what the website was about or who made it and most people were pretty freaked out about it. I first of it the website two days ago when a friend IMed me and told me it was some military site. I did some research and found out that nobody really knew what it was; some thought it was a marketing scheme, others thought it was a countdown to the release of a virus (like me :-P) and still others managed to believe it was part of a terrorist plot.

Well the time has come and gone and we have figured out that it was a plan to see how the general public would react to the unknown. We all just got owned folks. Yes, owned big time by some 23 year old guy from Florida who put together a website with a javascript countdown, and some changing random numbers. In fact, some groups even tried to hack the site (a few managed to as shown to the right).

But what can we conclude about such a profound and yet simple project as this? That humans react possibly too quickly, or maybe we are just too judgemental or hastey in our actions. Who knows? I for one find it to be one of the most clever projects I've ever seen, affecting the entire planet and raising concern in the minds of thousands. Almost as dramatic as the turn-of-the-century radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds.

But whatever the conclusion, we can all say we've been duped-- duped big time. When you click on the first link to go to the eon8 homepage you are presented with another link to go to a summary page. An excerpt from that page explaining what the hell happened is below.

We were amazed to discover that the site was instantly linked with terrorism, simply for the fact that it seems mysterious. Evil was the number one first impression people had of the site, in spite of the fact that there are no threats on the site. The only thing Eon 8 says is "We don't want you here". Nothing else.
Other less disappointing opinions were social experimentation (which was correct), James Bond movie viral marketing, and promotions for video games.
For many people, being faced with a countdown timer was an instant reason to try to shut down or hack the site. This is a worrying reaction, that if someone doesn't understand something they must destroy it. As a result, the servers have been hit quite hard these last few days, but luckily 99% of the 'hackers' could easily be described as 'l4me n00bs'.
Another worrying example of paranoia was how quickly people would jump to conclusions, such as telephoning the registered owner of a dog seen in a photograph on a server that hosts a page that links to eon8.

Video conversion software

Finally found some program to convert my 70 hours of video. Of course it's 1:1 when it comes to time so I'm not going to able to convert all the videos. I don't have 70 hours of spare time to do that. The only problem is that for some reason the sound is faster than the video as almost as if the video lags a little. It's wierd and hopefully I can figure it out without having to find a whole different program.

I might post some pictures in the future. I'm all out of USB ports to plug my webcam into to snap some shots and I don't feel like changing it. But believe me, I'll get around to it.

Happy holidays too all the readers out there! Hope your day is starting out as good as mine. I've got my new Archos Gmini 402 in my pocket and I'm listening to Collective Soul; good stuff. I'm also typing this little thing on my new Microsoft Ergnomic Keyboard. Then later on today I'll be getting a new mouse, some viewsonic wireless mouse. So a whole new desktop for me. I'm not going to go into detail on each thing and how good they all are. I'll leave that for tomorow or another day during the week.

Also if anyone knows of any good video conversion software please let me know because I'm having one hell of a time trying to get my videos which happen to be in the wrong format, onto my Gmini.

New ID scam fakes jury duty mishap

This is the latest in the con's popping up these days. In this one, someone acting as if they were a jury duty cordinator makes a call to your house and tells you that an arrest warrant is being made for you because you missed your jury duty. After you tell them that you did not recieve a notice telling you anything they ask you for your social security # and even your credit card number sometimes to look up your information in a database to see if there was a mistake.

This new from of stealing someones ID has already made its way to 11 different states.

The FBI is already looking into it and they are urging anyone who receives this call to ignore it. They say that this particular scam is hard to ignore because the callers intimidate their victim by saying that they may be arrested if they don't do as told.

A 9-month-old baby and his family were denied their boarding passes for a
flight from the USA to Italy. He was on the US Transport Security
Administration's secretive 'No-Fly' list which deems individuals as suspected
terrorists. The baby is not alone. Since Sept. 2001 over 28,000 people have
applied to be cleared of TSA's branding which prevents them from flying or even
boarding a plane. Over 2000 Peter Johnsons, for example, have complained to the
TSA.

To get 'cleared', applicants must apply for a letter which must accompany
them during air-travel. However, the letter does not prevent delays. Passengers
are still hassled. One of the innocent Peter Johnsons describes the process as
"hellish".

Google releasing computers for India and China

This year for Christmas Google is marketing $200 computers to people in India and China. According to sources, it will partner with California based Wyse technology.

The computers have no harddrive, or CPU, just a monitor keyboard and mouse. The rest of the functions will be performed by connecting to a server and relying off of that. It will manage and control the PC from it as well. Not only will this prevent the spread of viruses, it will also provide a means for a safe way to keep files private.

The PC will run on software created by Google; hardware and other technicalities will be managed by Wyse technology.

Amazing free game

Update: Well it seems to liven up to it's looks. It's got the gameplay features of Battlefield 2 and Counterstrike. The graphics are really above average for a free game (resembles America's Army graphics) which is good. The physics and effects are great especially the explosions with the rocket launcher; great stuff.

One of the more important things that I miss in this game is that ability to bind certain keys for different things like crouching and jumping and moving. 30 minutes in and I still couldn't figure out how to switch teams, or perhaps it just wont let you.

Student suspended for speaking Spanish

A Kansas City student has been suspended from school for 1 1/2 days for speaking in Spanish to another student.

"It was, like, totally not in the classroom," the high school junior said, recalling the infraction. "We were in the, like, hall or whatever, on restroom break. This kid I know, he's like, 'Me prestas un dolar?' ['Will you lend me a dollar?'] Well, he asked in Spanish; it just seemed natural to answer that way. So I'm like, 'No problema.' "

Now he (the student) is planning on filing a lawsuit against the school for suspending him for talking in a different language other than English.

Chicago plane skids off runway onto busy street

A jet in Chicago attempting to land on a snow covered run way slid off the runway, through a fence, and onto a busy street killing a six-year-old boy.

All 100 aboard were able to exit safely but two cars were destroyed and one was pinned under the belly of the plane. A six-year-old boy was in one of the cars died at the hospital. Overall, 10 people were injured including two from the plane.

``There are no indications that there are any maintenance problems with that aircraft whatsoever,'' Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said. The pilot had done all he could to save the plane according to reporters.

The plane's nose was crushed, and a severely damaged engine was on the ground, he said.

$25,000 lottery winner loses ticket, then finds it.

The winning lottery ticket holder Mike Sargent called home to tell his wife that he had the best Christmas present. He then wrote his name on it and went on his way, but on his way home he dropped the ticket.

"I was thinking god just took it out of my hand," Sargent said.

After days of searching through trash bins and fields and even calling the fire department to help light up the fields to search at night, he posted a $2,000 reward for finding the winning ticket. At one point they had a were able to get help from a radio station.

He was finally able to catch a break when he received a call five days later from Gerardo Ruiz, a water meter reader who happened to find the ticket while on the job. Ruiz was planning on keeping the ticket for himself because he had not seen any of the signs around town.

Sargent will have to wait to receive the money though because when Ruiz found the ticket he smeared the name when he stepped on it. Forensics scientists are currently working to confirm the ticket holder was Sargent. He just hopes to get the money by Christmas.

85 Yr. old name in car taken away by tow truck in cold weather

Police in the western city of Edmonton, Alberta, said frost had obscured the
car's windows and a tow-truck driver, unaware of the elderly man sitting in the
driver's seat, took the car to the police compound. The incident occurred
Tuesday.
"The security officer at that site along with the tow-truck driver
noticed that there was some movement in the car," said Edmonton Police
spokeswoman Lisa Lammi.
"They accessed the vehicle and sure enough there was
an elderly man inside. He was disoriented but he was not unconscious."

Scary stuff to have to find an old man inside a car. Seems like something out of a horror movie.

Sony pays artists to spray graffiti ads on streets

Not content with simply knowingly infecting its customers' computers with
security-hole inducing spyware, Sony is now sponsoring a "guerrilla" graffiti ad
campaign to promote the PSP, covering inner city neighborhoods with images of
kids playing with its overpriced, crippled handheld.

Seems Sony is getting into an aweful lot of trouble these days.

On Wednesday I wrote that the forums for Neowin.net are now running on the latest version, well now the homepage appears to be up as well.

The latest version of the homepage for Neowin.net (version 5) is up and well not running actually. Most of the features such as comments aren't functioning.

Now the new skin/layout for the site and forums are the next priority with an expected release in the next couple of weeks.
